Ulster’s Head Start wins support; Catskill District Gets Recognition – Daily Freeman
The Ulster County Head Start & Early Head Start Community Action Committee has received one-time funding of $750 from the Stewarts Holiday Match program.
The funds have been requested and designated to assist families enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start with transportation costs such as bus tickets, taxis and gas cards to access Head Start and Early Start program services. Headstart. Due to ongoing budget constraints, the program is no longer able to provide transportation for enrolled children, which can create barriers for families who bring their children to school on a regular basis. The grant will help the program overcome short-term transportation barriers for these families.
UCCAC Head Start serves children ages 3-5 in Kingston, Ellenville, Plattekill and Saugerties. It also serves children from birth to 3 years old, in Kingston only, through Early Head Start. Inc. The Catskill Central School District has received a Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its commitment to music education.
Now in its 23rd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education for all students.
To qualify for the Top Communities designation, the school district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class attendance, instruction time, facilities, program support of music and community music creation programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the University of Kansas Music Research Institute.
Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015 and the emphasis on comprehensive education, many school districts have recommitted to music and arts education programs. During the pandemic, music and arts programs have been a vital part of keeping students engaged in school. The law provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Achievement and Achievement Grants. NAMM Foundation research has found that these grants are widely used by school districts to bridge the pedagogical gaps in access to music and arts education.
“Music education is about the whole development of the child,” Michelle Storrs-Ryan, music teacher and principal at Catskill Middle School and Catskill High School, said in a press release. “It’s about learning the basic music fundamentals to music in cultures around the world. This includes performing on stage in front of families, friends and our community, and for some, on stages across the country and the world. Without a quality musical education, we deprive our children of part of their identity.
