Local in-person events celebrate the community and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – An annual celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. returns with local in-person events on January 15-17. The theme for this year’s celebration is âDiversity, Equity and Inclusion: Realizing the Dream. âThe theme honors local collaborative efforts to advance Cabarrus County’s diverse population.
Dream day in the park
A new event, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream Day in the Park, takes place on January 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Atrium Health Ballpark, located at 1 Cannon Baller Way in Kannapolis. There is no charge to attend.
Beware of the ongoing pandemic, organizers have created the event to replace an indoor breakfast typically held at the Bethel Enrichment Center.
The Dream Day event will feature free food and entertainment, a minority trade fair, a health and wellness corridor, a local organizations fair, a youth art exhibition, a “Fill the bus” fundraising for food donations, kickball matches with local public safety officers and government officials, local drumming shows and more.
Event organizers encourage participants to “Fill the bus” by providing non-perishable food donations to support the Co-operative Christian Ministry’s food aid program.
Non-profit organizations serving Cabarrus County and local minority-owned businesses are encouraged to participate in the fair. Businesses can provide information, but sales are prohibited. Submit your applications before January 11 to mlkdreamday.org. Event organizers will review nominations and make final selections by January 13.
Sponsors for the event are the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, Bethel Baptist Church Ministries, the Bethel Enrichment Center and the Cabarrus County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Memorial walk and wreath laying
The 2022 Memorial Walk and Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place on January 17.
The commemorative walk is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on North Union Street near the Concord branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library. The walk will begin at 11:30 am and continue along Cabarrus Avenue W to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. The wreath laying ceremony begins at noon. Additional parking is available at 484 Cabarrus Avenue W, Concord.
Non-perishable foods will be accepted at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza from 11 am to 12:30 pm on January 17th. The items will be donated to the Cooperative Christian Ministry.

Efforts to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Cabarrus County began many years ago through the work of local community leaders including Rowland Jordan and the Logan Optimist Club.
In 2008, a joint committee was formed with the goal of impactful collaboration. The expanded list of partners aims to serve, educate, and encourage community members to embrace Dr. King’s ideologies and actively engage in ‘Keeping the Dream Alive’ locally, state and nationally. nationwide.
