Reaching Out Assisting Refugees is delighted to be able to organize a picnic in white next weekend.
The picnic will be held outdoors, with liquor sales inside and access to restrooms, at German Hall at 71 Caledonia Avenue on Saturday, July 16 at 5 p.m., rain or shine. sale.
ROAR, a Nanaimo-based volunteer organization dedicated to sponsoring LGBTQ refugees fleeing persecution in their home countries, will provide “a fun opportunity to get out and meet new people,” said volunteer board member Horst Backé. of directors and treasurer.
“It’s a little different. People can dress as formally or informally as they want,” he said, adding that guests could wear anything from white painter overalls to a wedding dress or a tuxedo.
The first Picnic en Blanc took place in 2019 and, due to its resounding success, was decidedly postponed as an annual celebration – with a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic due to safety restrictions on gatherings. In previous years, Backé said the event has had up to around 140 guests and he hopes to break, or at least reach, the same attendance record.
Guests are asked to dress all in white, since white “contains all the colors of the rainbow”, and are encouraged to bring and decorate their own tables and chairs for a chance to win the prize for the “best furnished table”. You can also sit at one of the banquet tables provided.
The $50 ticket price for the fundraiser includes a box lunch with a vegetarian option – wine and bottled water will be available at the cash bar.
