Girl Scouts of Colorado: MacKenzie Scott donates nearly $3 million to the organization

DENVER (KDVR) — Philanthropist, novelist and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos MacKenzie Scott has donated nearly $3 million to the Girl Scouts of Colorado, the organization announced Tuesday.

The record $2.8 million is part of Scott’s $84.5 million donation to the Girl Scouts of the USA. Scott chose 29 of the 111 Girl Scout councils to receive part of the donation.

“Our vision is to continue on the path of innovation and create ways to meet girls where they are; raising issues that matter to them, such as mental health, equity and our environment,” said Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark.

Scott’s endowment will help the Girl Scouts program continue to encourage girls to lead and succeed in the world. The organization aims to empower girls to meet life’s challenges and achieve the goals they set for themselves.

“The support of all of our donors, including this generous support from Mackenzie Scott, is essential to carrying out our work of reimagining and transformation. We are thrilled to prove how his investment in girls will change the world, because when one girl succeeds, we all succeed,” said GSUSA CEO Sofia Chang.

Why MacKenzie Scott donated to Girl Scouts

Scott pledged to give half his lifetime worth after his divorce from Amazon founder Bezos and has given approximately $12.7 billion to more than 1,200 nonprofits since July 2020. according to Forbes. His current wealth is listed at $34.3 billion on Forbes.

Scott donates his money to unrelated nonprofits, allowing organizations to use it however they see fit, Forbes said.
