LAKE CITY, Fla. (WCJB) – The Equifest has raised funds for the organization Horses Without Humans. This is a non-profit organization that rescues horses and rehabilitates them so that they can be adopted.

The organization began when founder Yvonne Barteau realized that nearly 140,000 horses were being shipped from the United States for slaughter.

“I was just thinking that if I’m a horse trainer and I make a living in the horse business and don’t do anything about it, then I’m the worst. So I changed my everything to start the rescue, ”said Barteau.

Kayla Barteau is one of the trainers and she describes the seriousness of the horses they save.

“They’re covered in scabies, their hair is all gone and their skin just scaly, their fungus and all kinds of horrible things on them.” I have seen horses that cannot walk. I have had horses where we have used ropes and blankets to help them get up.

Kayla explains how this impacted her life.

“It’s a huge impact because when I was little I was also afraid of horses, but having a horse more afraid of me than me is really scary for me and it’s really sad for me.”

They perform rescues every day to help change the welfare of horses, one horse at a time.
